Our Process
Theater in Asylum is creating theatrical adaptations of the Democratic Primary and General Election Debates. With a small army of actors, designers, dramaturgs, and support staff, we are watching each debate, analyzing its content, devising an original piece around it, and presenting it live in NYC. With mimicry, abstraction, and earnest curiosity, we seek to illuminate the candidates, their policies, and their characters.
STEP 1:
Watch Party Every debate process begins with watching it together live on TV as it happens
|
STEP 2:
Analysis Meetings Next we analyze the transcript and identify the most ripe material for the adaptation
|
STEP 3:
Rehearsal Then we begin devising, improvising and learning the material
|
STEP 4:
Performance Finally we perform the piece to an audience and gather feedback to do it all again

Theater in Asylum (TIA) is a New York-based theater company founded in 2010 to challenge and empower our community. TIA joyfully pursues a rigorous research and an ensemble-driven approach to theater-making. We create performances to investigate our past, interpret our present, and imagine our future. We prize space to process, space to question—asylum—for ourselves and our community.
