DUENDE: a mysterious force that everyone feels and no philosopher has explained.
There are many names for the dark force that drives us to confront ourselves and our deepest fears and truths. This eternal energy continues to possess artists: seducing them, taking hold of their imaginations, compelling them to create. THEATER IN ASYLUM continues to face the duende with the European debut of ¡Olé!, and we are thrilled to kick off our fundraising efforts with The DUENDE Project. Theater artists, musicians, dancers, poets and visual artists unite to seek the duende.
Join us for an unforgettable night of bewitching, mysterious and dangerous new works.

Assistant Choreography by Dan Eric Martin
Not in order to teach others but to learn with them what our existence, our organism, our personal and repeatable experience have to give us; to learn to break down the barriers which surround us and to free ourselves from the breaks which hold us back, from the lies about ourselves which we manufacture daily for ourselves and for others; to destroy the limitations caused by our ignorance or lack of courage; in short, to fill the emptiness in us: to fulfill ourselves...work is a ripening, an evolution, an uplifting which enables us to emerge from darkness into a blaze of light.” -- Steve Jobs. Or maybe it was Mark Zuckerberg.
Look it up.

Theater in Asylum (TIA) is a New York-based theater company founded in 2010 to challenge and empower our community. TIA joyfully pursues a rigorous research and an ensemble-driven approach to theater-making. We create performances to investigate our past, interpret our present, and imagine our future. We prize space to process, space to question—asylum—for ourselves and our community.
