five IN ASYLUM is a night of experiments with five performance that must adhere to five rules, followed by five talkbacks. Each performance, whatever the medium, must adhere to the five rules: one loud moment, 10 seconds of silences, a moment of stillness, one emotional outburst and one close-up. These rules are left up to the interpretation of the lead artists and their collaborators for their performance. Following each piece, the audience will have a chance to engage with the creators about the work they have just seen.
LUCIA
Created by Paul Bedard and Ari Hader Performed by Ari Hader
“He heard the sob passing loudly down his father's throat and opened his eyes with a nervous impulse. His very brain was sick and powerless. By his monstrous way of life he seemed to have put himself beyond the limits of reality. Nothing moved him or spoke to him from the real world. He could scarcely recognize as his own thoughts, and repeated slowly to himself:
-- I am Stephen Dedalus.”
Several Windows
Created and performed by Jerome Ellis
Several Windows is a piece written for saxophone, sampler and looper. It samples the poet Dylan Thomas, Frank Sinatra's In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning, French composer Claude Debussy's string quartet, Czech composer Bedřich Smetana's Vltava, LaGuardia airport and the composer himself.

Theater in Asylum (TIA) is a New York-based theater company founded in 2010 to challenge and empower our community. TIA joyfully pursues a rigorous research and an ensemble-driven approach to theater-making. We create performances to investigate our past, interpret our present, and imagine our future. We prize space to process, space to question—asylum—for ourselves and our community.
