Theater in Asylum is a New York-based theater company at makes rigorously-researched, ensemble-driven theater to challenge and empower. We prize the theater as a space — as an asylum — where we can process and question, where reality is temporarily suspended, and where we can create with joy. Since 2010, Theater in Asylum has brought artists and not-yet-artists together to read, research, devise, and perform politically charged, of-the-moment new plays.

Love For Sale
A Ms. Zilbert creation

What’s love got to do with it? Nothing, darling. We’re talking about LUST and how she’s my favorite sin! Singing the songs of yesterlust that apply to forever.

Ms. Zilbert, aka Gilbert D. Sanchez, is a gender-queer cabaret starlette and actress, mostly known for their many self produced cabaret shows. She played Angel in Rent this summer in Philly and it was everything she could have ever wanted. She’s done 5 TV shows and one movie that hasn’t come out yet. @gilbertwithaz to keep up with her.

Cans
By Parnia "Nyx" Ayari
In collaboration with NSangou Njikam

Mel, once considered one of the "8 evil thoughts," has gotten over not being assigned as a sin, and is collecting cans that have been thrown out by The People. Ven has been discreetly hard at work fighting the unjust delineations between "sin" and "virtue," advocating against being the most villainized sin. Together, the Human Aspects plot against unchecked Pride and Greed.

His poems have appeared in Ecotone, The Georgia Review, Passages North, Ploughshares, and elsewhere. CREATOR
Written and directed by Jayda Jones
Performed by Jalissa Fulton

Under the holy glow of a ring light, two Black women — one a viral influencer, one a disillusioned playwright — battle over what it means to create, to survive, and to be seen. As they spiral through the seven deadly sins of the internet age, their faith in art, God, and each other is tested. CREATOR is a darkly funny, poetic reflection on ambition, authenticity, and the cost of turning your life into content.

Jayda Jones (she/her) is a Black, femme, queer, New York City–based director and producer who has led over 22 theatrical and multimedia productions across the city, known for making bold art with brave people and building spaces that heal while disrupting the norm. Homegrown in the projects of southwestern Pennsylvania, Jayda brings a people-first, identity-driven approach to every room she enters. Her creative ethos is rooted in empathy, equity, and experimentation—centering community care, deep listening, and a commitment to subverting monolithic portrayals of Black and Brown lives. Jayda’s work spans new plays, devised pieces, reimagined classics, and hybrid performance formats. Her projects have been presented at The Tank, Theater in Asylum, Fordham University, and in festivals across NYC and New Jersey.

Jalissa Fulton is a NYC based actress and Lifetime Member of The Actors Studio. She received her MFA at The Actors Studio Drama School, where she studied the Stanislavsky Method. Jalissa’s diverse artistic background and training has given her a firm artistic foundation and an ability to approach work with a unique perspective. One of her favorite voice over productions was in A Christmas Carol for Standby for Places Podcast, voicing characters: Belle, Broker #2, & more. Some of her all-time favorite theatre credits include Shylock in Merchant of Venice, Catherine in Proof, and as 'GOD’ when she performed at The Tank in God And All Her Children.

Gil Verrelli is a puppeteer and jack of all trades. They work with Redwing Blackbird Theater, Bread & Puppet Theater, and others. They live in Rosendale, NY. They are interested in the role of theater as a tool for social change and healing.
